This one is optional!

You can work on any substrate of you choice for these sessions.

Use your art journal, loose sheets of paper, even canvases!

I added this bonus demo as I decided to dedicate a special journal for this workshop and altered a children's book to make it even more interesting. Check out the thrift store - mine was 20p ( about 25 cents) ! It doesn't have to be a children's book of course, I just like them for the variety of shapes and sizes you can find!

I have tried to make these lessons as accessible as possible so that beginners don't need a huge bunch of supplies to dive in, but white gesso is recommended and works really well on most surfaces. You CAN also use white ( even cream or ivory) household matt emulsion paint, as long as the pages in the book you are altering are not too shiny, or it mght flake when dry. If the book is shiny, try sanding the pages before priming.

Also, you do NOT have to prime all the pages at once like I did! You can end each session by priming the page for the next day, or work on a couple at a time... whatever works for YOUR rhythm. I like to prepare the whole book, because then I have the choice to hop around and CHOOSE which page I am going to make the next project on - there are no rules, you don't have to use your pages in order ! Move about, work from the back or middle of your book.... follow your intuition!

Don't be afraid to be inventive and experiment!
