Supplies Used
I worked on mixed media paper. A smooth, heavyweight paper is great for this project, but use whatever substrate is right for you….lighter quality papers can be strengthened with a layer of white gesso primer.
I also masked off the edge of my paper with masking tape, but this is entirely optional .
Pencil ( any)
Water, brushes, cloth or tissue for wiping and a palette of some sort for your paints.
Old credit card or palette knife.
Scrap of sponge ( I used a piece rescued from some packaging). You could substitute with screwed up tissue.
Glue- I use acrylic matt medium, as the matt finish allows layers of paint to be easily added. You can also use Modpodge or PVA glue ( pva can be harder to paint or draw over as it dries to a shine).
Oil pastels- I used Turquoise, Sennelier brand, and a little white too, Any brand is fine. You could substitute with a wax crayon and experiment, but if you are interested in mixed media I would personally recommend you get a box of cheap oil pastels as they are SO versatile I don’t think you will regret them!
Selection of collage papers-I chose blues and neutral tones but you can paint over them too. You don’t need a lot.
Acrylic Paints-this is what I used, but do improvise! (You need a selection of two or three rich blues and optionally a couple of metallics for accenting.)
Metallic acrylic paint - I used Maya Metallic in ‘Petrol’ and Sennelier Abstract Acrylic in Irridescent Bronze #022
White acrylic ( any brand)
Primary Cyan ( bright turquoise blue) I used Golden Fluid brand Phthalo Blue ( red shade 139)
Daler Rowney Cryla Cadmium Red ( hue 503)
Daler Rowney Cryla Black acrylic paint ( any brand)
Coloured pencils - Choose colours close to your paint colours where possible.
I used ; Karismacolor Raspberry, Crimson Red and Copenhagen Blue. Derwent Artists Pencil in Felt Grey #5310
