As ever, I encourage you to be adventurous and experiment with techniques, but to reproduce the same techniques used in this portrait here is a list of what I have used, along with a few suggestions on how you might substitute with other media from your supply stash.

FSubstrate: You can create on any substrate of your choosing. I used an oval canvas for this piece, approximately 12” x 8”. If you work on paper or in your art journal I recommend that you prime the paper first with a layer of white gesso.

** note if you do NOT have chalk pastels you can still do this workshop using only willow charcoal and gesso to create a tonal painting**

For the exact demonstration shown you will need:

Water, brushes ( at least one flat and one small pointed brush), cloth or tissue as needed. White gesso

Clear gesso

Willow charcoal ( you could also draw with one of your chalk pastels)

Selection of soft (chalk) pastels .

I*note a hairdryer or heat gun is very useful for drying layers ( especially if you are impatient like me!)

Coloured pencils- you will want as close as possible to your selected pastel shades, plus a black or very dark blue or brown.

optional white acrylic paint for adding a few dots and pattern details- you can also use gesso or white ink.
